In recent years buying domains has become somewhat of a skill. A lot of the good domain names have been taken long ago, although sometimes you can find some gems. I register pretty much all my domain names with Go Daddy. I know a lot of people have issues with Go Daddy, but I’ve never had any bad experiences with them, and they have some good deals, especially if you buy in bulk. Also, it is very easy to find Go Daddy promo codes online to save you money on your order. Just a simple Google search can produce lots of results.
Most of the time when I purchase a domain I’m thinking about the telephone test. If this domain name were said to someone over the phone would they remember it, or know how to spell it without any guidance? There are sometimes exceptions to this, such as the trendy web 2.0 made up words domains like meebo.com. Or domains like flickr.com. Even though flickr.com is very successful I bet ficker.com gets a lot of flickr traffic.
Sometimes keyword rich domain names like free-acne-medicine.com work out well for awhile because of getting search engine traffic, but those don’t work as well for companies or online tools and similar things that you may have developed.
Also another piece of golden advice is to run the domain name past someone you trust. See what they think of the name. You might think a name is cool, but it might not be. Any criticism is good criticism.

1One more thing I’d add to domain buying. Some of the domain searching tools are really scams. They’ll log all your searches and you’ll notice the next day your really great domain is registered.
One legit one I like is http://domainsbot.com , and they have a nice firefox search plugin too.
